NEW YORK, June 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks edged higher on Wednesday morning as investors awaited key economic data.
Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 10.56 points, or 0.03 percent, to 34,610.38. The S&P 500 was up 8.29 points, or 0.20 percent, to 4,235.55. The Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 62.03 points, or 0.45 percent, to 13,986.94.
Eight of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors climbed in morning trading, with healthcare up 1 percent, leading the gainers. Financials slipped 1 percent, the worst-performing group.
The May U.S. consumer price index, a key gauge of inflation, is slated for Thursday. Traders will look to the report to assess the inflation levels.
On Tuesday, U.S. stocks finished mixed with the Dow down a bit, as solid gains in consumer discretionary and energy were partly offset by losses in utilities and consumer staples.
